Membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists entitles individuals to numerous benefits. Of primary benefit is registration on the Register of Members providing the legal authorization to practice professional engineering and geoscience in British Columbia under the provincial Engineers and Geoscientists Act. As a self-regulating body under the Act, APEGBC maintains the high standards of professional practice that British Columbians have come to expect, through a comprehensive peer review system.
Communication is a key benefit of membership and APEGBC members are kept informed on professional and Association issues through the APEGBC web site, Branch and Division newsletters and the Association's journal, Innovation.
Members also benefit from the Association's expanding list of affinity partners. These partnerships provide additional benefits including: a discounted cellular phone plan, auto purchase insurance and rental programs, a private health services plan, financial management services, registered education savings plan services, a group insurance plan, and a biennial compensation schedule. Watch this site for new partnerships as they develop.
The Association membership is grouped into 15 geographical areas with an Association branch organization in each:
An executive is elected in each Branch to coordinate the activities of the members. General functions of the Branches and their executives include:
- advising Council of the opinions of the members relating to Association matters;
- acting as a focus for discussion of Association affairs;
- providing direct regional communication with the membership;
- organizing the delivery of local professional development opportunities;
- facilitating the efforts of the Association to increase public, and in particular student, awareness of the value of engineering and geoscience; and coordinating local meetings and social events.
- Association members are encouraged to become active in the affairs of their local Branch. Important programs that are offered by many Branches include career awareness initiatives for elementary students, organization and judging of science fairs for secondary students, mentoring programs for members-in-training or university students, coordination of professional development opportunities for members and facilitation of technical presentations.
Special interest Divisions provide a forum for the exchange of ideas in a particular field or area of interest. APEGBC has a number of special interest Divisions that allow members with common technical or other interests to share and diseminate information and to review and develop policy in that specific area. Division membership is open to any member of the Association upon payment of a nominal annual fee (see below).
