Brian Nadjiwon Scholarship

The Engineers and Geoscientists BC Foundation has responded with interest in establishing the Brian Nadjiwon Memorial Scholarship, valued at $2,500, to Indigenous undergraduate students in earth sciences or geoscience programs in BC.

This Award has been proposed by Brent Nadjiwon and Leonora King, PhD, Geography Instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and is in memory of Brent’s brother, Brian Nadjiwon. When Brian passed away in 2020 at the age of 59, he was an IT and Geography student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. He was an avid student with a strong passion for geoscience and a plan to pursue geoscience research in graduate school. In particular, he was interested in large-scale tectonic and seismic processes operating in the Pacific Northwest. Brian was originally from Ontario and a member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. Although Brian was not able to fulfill his dream of researching geoscience, this scholarship will commemorate his unrealized potential in the field of geoscience.

Deadline

Applications accepted until 11:59 PM on Friday, September 29, 2023.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Self-identified as Indigenous through their respective University’s Indigenous Students office.
  • Enrolled in a geoscience program or planning to enroll in a geoscience program at a BC post-secondary institution.
  • Can be a non-BC resident, but must be enrolled at BC post-secondary institution.

Evaluation of Applications

Applications will be evaluated based on an essay submission (2-page maximum), as well as transcripts (required) and supporting information such as letters of support (optional). These components will be evaluated as follows:

Essay (90% of total weight):

  • Motivation: Why has the student chosen to pursue an education in geoscience.
  • Commitment: What are the student’s education and career plans and how do they intend to ensure success in their field?
  • Obstacles and mitigating circumstances: What obstacles has this student faced in pursuing their geoscience education.

Transcripts (10% of total weight).

  • Transcripts are not required to reflect excellence, but in the event that they demonstrate past struggles with education, should be addressed within the context of the essay or in supporting material.

Supporting material is optional and not required for an application, but may help students with exceptional mitigating circumstances. This material may be in the form of reference letters, for example.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee comprising at least two professional geoscientists (P.Geo.).
