Terms of Reference

Purpose:

The Engineers and Geoscientists BC Software Engineering Advisory Group is responsible for providing advice to the organization on relevant matters related to Software Engineering in BC.

Reporting Structure:

The advisory group reports directly to the Director, Professional Practice, Standards and Development.

Duties and Expectations:

Software Engineering Advisory Group members will be:

  • Assisting Engineers and Geoscientists BC in the preparation of policies that describe the scope and applied definition of Software Engineering in the province. This should include guidance to inform Engineers and Geoscientists BC understanding of the various Software Engineering related job titles and how they are used in industry.
  • Assisting Engineers and Geoscientists BC in the preparation of strategic initiatives to inform industry and its professionals of policy changes related to the registration, practice and enforcement and compliance of Software Engineering professionals.
  • Providing advice to Engineers and Geoscientists BC regarding the registration process for Software Engineering professionals.
  • Reviewing applicable professional practice guidelines and provide suggestions for technical amendments, updates, and revisions as necessary.
  • Assisting the organization with the identification and/or development of continuing professional development offerings related to Software.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Advisory group members are required to be registrants in good standing with the organization, although certain exceptions may be made to accommodate industry participants;
  • Membership is best suited to practicing professionals familiar with software engineering and/or software intensive systems; and
  • Advisory group members will be selected to attempt to span a variety of organizational sizes and practice areas.

Term of Office:

  • Terms are 3 years.

Average Time Commitment:

  • Advisory group members should expect a minimum time commitment of six two-hour meetings per year requiring approximately 1-hour preparation per meeting.
  • Meetings typically occur once a month (typically excluding summer months) and are held either virtually or at the Engineers and Geoscientists BC office in Burnaby (if permitted under health guidelines), although call in options are available.
  • In addition, advisory group members are expected to volunteer for subgroups to work on guidelines, strategic initiatives and other special projects as required.
